My sons are now in their 30s but absolutely loved all the old classics. Wind in the Willows, Lord of the rings, Blinky Bill, Magic Pudding, Narnia and heaps more. You don't mention age but that would need to be considered too.
Iused to read The Hobbit to my class every year when I was teaching. Also in the line up was... The Indian in the Cupboard by Lynn Reid Banks. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The first book from the the Cairo Jim series by Geoffrey McSkimming. This series is a lot of fun and so I gave the kids a starter on that series. Blueback by Tim Winton as a nod to Australian authors. I'm sure there were some others...

Suggestions for younger kids: Roald Dahl books, the 'What Katie did' series and the 'Anne of Green Gables' series and related books for girls.
